What counts as urgent

Some garage door problems are inconvenient; others leave you exposed or stuck. A door that won't close at night means the house can be entered through the garage. A door that won't open in the morning can mean a missed shift, a missed school run or a missed flight. A door hanging off its track is a safety risk to anyone walking past it.

When you tell us that one of these is happening, the request goes to the top of the list. Many repair companies keep the most common parts, such as standard springs, cables and rollers, on their trucks precisely so they can fix urgent problems in one visit.

If the situation is less pressing, for example a noisy door or an opener that works only sometimes, we'll still arrange a visit quickly, but you'll be able to choose a time that suits you.

What to do while you wait

First, don't make it worse. Unplug the opener so nobody presses the button. Keep children and pets out of the garage. Don't try to lift a door with a broken spring or cable, and don't stand under a door that is partly open and stuck.

If the door is open and won't close, think about what's visible and accessible from the street. Move valuables out of the garage or into the house, lock the door between the garage and the house, and if you have to leave, tell a neighbor.

If a car is trapped, check whether the problem is the opener or the door. If the opener has simply lost power or failed, and the springs are intact, the manual release may let you lift the door by hand. If you're not sure the springs are intact, wait for the technician.

After a car hits the door

Backing into a closed garage door, or driving out before it has fully opened, is surprisingly common. The bottom panels usually take the damage, along with the tracks and the rollers on that side. The door may still move, but crooked and noisy, and it can come off the track entirely the next time it's used.

Take a few photos for your records and possibly your insurance, then stop using the door. The technician will decide whether the panels can be straightened or replaced individually, whether the tracks need replacing and whether the door can be made safe the same day.

If the door is badly damaged and a new one has to be ordered, the technician can usually secure the opening or get the door working temporarily so the house isn't left exposed while you wait.

Storms, outages and surges

The Houston area's storms don't only bring rain. Power outages leave people without a working opener, and the surge when power returns can damage an opener's logic board. Strong wind can push a door off its tracks or bend panels on wide doors.

After a storm, check that the door runs straight, that the bottom seal is intact and that the opener responds normally. If anything looks wrong, use the manual release only if the springs are clearly intact, and request a repair for the rest.

A surge protector on the opener's outlet and a battery backup unit are inexpensive ways to make the next storm less disruptive.

Fair pricing when it's urgent

Urgent visits shouldn't mean surprise prices. Before any work begins, the technician should explain the problem and give you the price. Some companies charge a higher rate for nights, weekends or holidays; if so, you should be told when we call you back, not on the invoice.

Be cautious of anyone who insists on replacing the whole door or the opener on an emergency call without showing you what failed. Most emergencies come down to a spring, a cable, a track or the opener's controls, all of which are repairable.

If you feel pressured or the price doesn't match what you were told, tell us. We'd rather know, and it helps us decide which companies we keep working with.

Questions

Emergency & Same-Day Repair — asked and answered

Can someone come today?

For doors stuck open, cars trapped inside or doors off their tracks, same-day visits are often possible. We'll confirm the timing when we call you back.

My door is stuck open and I have to leave. What should I do?

Unplug the opener, lock the door between the garage and the house, move valuables inside and let a neighbor know. Don't try to force the door down.

Is it more expensive at night or on weekends?

Some companies charge an after-hours fee. If so, you'll be told before the visit is confirmed.

What if the part isn't on the truck?

The technician will make the door safe and secure, then return once the part arrives. Common springs, cables and rollers are usually carried on the truck.
